Build staff confidence from the start
Teachers need to understand how their recordings will be used. Individual coaching reports are private to the teacher; leadership insight is anonymised and aggregated. Starlight is designed for professional development, with no teacher ranking or performance-management function.
Teachers control deletion of their uploads and associated reports. Our DPIA and Trust and Privacy Pledge explain the data arrangements, and One West supports STAR21 as our data protection advisers.
We provide staff and parent communication guidance to help your schools introduce Starlight clearly. Your DPO or compliance lead is welcome to join a discussion whenever that is useful.

Can leaders read an individual teacher’s report?
Leadership dashboards show anonymised, aggregated patterns rather than individual coaching reports. Teachers can choose to bring their own feedback into a coaching conversation.
What can we see across our schools?
Starlight can bring together anonymised teaching themes across participating schools. This helps leaders explore shared professional learning needs. We will show you the available views and access arrangements for your proposed setup in the demo.
Can we use our own teaching framework?
Organisation Templates allow feedback to reflect your teaching framework and priorities. We can discuss how to configure these for your schools while allowing for their different contexts.
Do teachers need to record video?
No. A simple audio recording is enough to get started, using a StarDrive or another suitable device. Starlight also accepts video uploads.
What about pupil voices and data protection?
Lesson recordings may contain pupil voices. Our DPIA, privacy information and communication resources support your trust’s review of the arrangements before recording begins. We are happy to discuss these with your DPO.
How representative are the insights?
Insights reflect the lessons that participating teachers upload. They should be interpreted in that context and alongside other evidence. Changes in participation, subjects or recording patterns can affect what appears in the analysis.
How do we establish whether Starlight is useful?
Agree what you want to learn before the pilot. Review whether teachers find the feedback useful, whether recording fits their routines and whether the resulting insights help leaders plan support. Longer-term changes in practice need a longer review period.
